There are plenty of reasons why you might want to create a more concise wardrobe. Perhaps you’re downsizing where you live and have less space for storage. Neutral tones are the heart of most capsule wardrobes. White, black and grey can be worn on their own or combined for a sophisticated, classic look. Colour is easily added with accessories: handbags, shoes, scarves, costume jewellery, whatever takes your fancy really.
The first step to developing your own smaller but more functional wardrobe is evaluating what you already have. Pull it all out of the closet and check it out: does it still fit? Does it need any care (buttons replaced, the hem fixed)? When was the last time you wore it? What else does it go with?
What you’re aiming for, ideally, is between 30 and 50 pieces that you can wear everywhere. The aim, once you’ve completed your edit, is to live with it and see how it works. If there are still pieces you never wear, it’s time for you to say goodbye to them.
